It’s a tough environment for any bearing let alone asking to get any sort of longevity out of it even though this bush had suffered years of abuse in a harsh environment.

We received a call from a customer who needed help with replacing a cracked and damaged bush for a mud pump.

The bush was located at the end of a square shaft and was constantly operating in an abrasive and muddy environment.

It would be an understatement to say it’s a tough environment for any bearing let alone asking to get any sort of longevity out of it even though the fractured bush had suffered years of abuse working in this harsh environment.

Back in the days before engineering plastics came on the scene a bronze bush or a special hardwood would probably have been used in this application with increased service and maintenance intervals as a consequence.

These days most customers are looking to reduce maintenance, increase productivity and get a longer service life out of their equipment in order to reduce downtime and cost of production. By using a dense thermo plastic material from Dotmar’s very extensive range of engineering plastics, BPT was able to get a new part CNC machined to solve the problem.

The dense thermo plastic material used in this instance, is a stain resistant plastic with a very low moisture absorption.

Like the old part, this new material is ideal and designed to sit in a dirt/mud environment and allow the shaft to have a plastic bush that is hardwearing and sustainable at high loads.

However, the properties of this new dense thermo plastic material allow mechanical and electrical characteristics to remain virtually unaffected by moisture.

Making this material ideally suited as a bronze bush replacement.

This material is particularly well suited for the manufacture of precision mechanical parts capable of sustaining high loads in challenging wear conditions especially where moisture is involved.

Once this part was redesigned, manufactured and supplied by BPT, the customer was back up and running within a few days.

The customer rang us a few days later and was very pleased with the result.
